The Success Story of the 2nd World Conference on Waste Management (WCWM) - 2021

The 2nd World Conference on Waste Management 2021 (WCWM 2021) which was held from 04th and 05th March 2021 in Virtually, Under the theme “Towards a Sustainable Future Through Circular Economy”. The conference was hosted by Association for Environment Management and Sustainability and Tsinghua University, China. INSEE Eco cycle was the Main Sponsor and International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) was the Main Organizing body.

WCWM 2021 covered a range of disciplinary areas such as policy and law, newest interdisciplinary approaches in Waste Management and Recycling, career and employment opportunities, to name a few along with the speeches from renowned speakers representing both academia and industry who are experts in waste management., The conference also offered a global platform to create new contacts in the field of Waste Management and Recycling by providing valuable networking time. The conference welcomed 40+ participants from 15 countries around the world.

INAUGURATION CEREMONY AND SPEAKERS

The opening remarks of WCWM 2021 were made by the Conference Co-Chairs Assoc. prof. Dongbei YUE (Dean, School of Environment, Tsinghua University, China) and Dr. Randika Jayasinghe (Head of the Department, Department of Biosystems Technology, Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura together and representing main sponsor INSEE Eco cycle Lanka, the director Mr. Sanjeewa Chulakumara address the gathering together with Mr. Isanka P. Gamage (Conference Convener/Managing Director, The International Institute of Knowledge Management).

WCWM 2021 created a platform for academicians, researchers, students, industry experts, policymakers, professionals and enthusiastic attendees to share their diverse experiences, discuss, argue and ultimately to find solutions to the issues related to the relevant subject.

WCWM 2021 comprised of five (5) technical sessions. The technical sessions were under the below themes.

Special Features of WCWM 2021

KEYNOTE FORUM AND PLENARY SPEECH

The Keynote forum was one of the significant sessions of the Conference and it was enlightened by Prof. Ajith de Alwis, from Sri Lanka (Coordinating Secretariat for Science Technology and Innovation (COSTI), Ministry of Science Technology and Research) under the title “Being Sensitive to Waste as a Resource: The Way Forward to Go Circular!” and Emma Burlow (Founder, Lighthouse Sustainability) from United Kingdom under the title Creating a More Circular Economy from Theory to Practice” and Mr. Sanjeewa Chulakumara from Sri Lanka (Director, INSEE Eco cycle Lanka) (Private) Limited) under the title of ‘Transforming to a Circular Economy, Practical Implementations of Waste Management in Sri Lanka’.

Plenary Speeches were delivered by, Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan from Northeastern University, United States under the title Aligning Financial Returns and Well-Being: Life Cycle Thinking”. Eng (Dr) A.G.
